Ed Pink Racing Engines Shop Sees Green with Energy Savings with LEDtronics Long-Life LED High Bay Luminaires

By LEDtronics, Inc.

Torrance, Calif., Oct. 3 – Ed Pink has been building racing engines since 1946, and Ed Pink Racing Engines — the company he founded in 1958 — has enjoyed success in nearly every form of motor sports over the past 56 years.

From developing winning engines for the top teams such as Ford, Pontiac, Toyota and Infiniti in IndyCar, NASCAR and Formula 5000 races, to providing specialized motors for dragsters, sprint cars, Funny Cars, midgets and vintage race cars, the company’s engines have accumulated over 100 victories and more than a dozen national championships, powering legends like Don Prudhomme and Tony Stewart to victory.

Nicknamed "The Old Master," Ed Pink built more than 5,000 engines during his 60-year career, mostly in his facility in an industrial area of Van Nuys, California. He sold the company six years ago to successful entrepreneur and vintage racecar collector and racer Thomas Malloy. It currently encompasses two buildings totaling approximately 12,000 square feet of floor space, where auto racing engines are built, rebuilt, tested, designed and developed for local, national and international customers.

When the time came to replace the outdated fluorescent lighting in their assembly and design areas where an eclectic combination of state-of-the-art precision equipment and machinery are used, Ed Pink Racing Engines turned to LEDtronics. Not only did LED lights provide more and brighter illumination, but they did so with dramatically lower energy consumption and producing only a fraction of the heat of fluorescents.

"The lighting is much better for our unique work environment," says General Manager Frank Honsowetz, former director of racing for Nissan North America who joined Ed Pink in 2001. "We are saving about $900 a month from the conversion to LED lighting," he notes. "At this rate, we will pay for the conversion in about 13 months."

The company’s existing lighting system consisted of 17 high-output T12 and T8 fixtures of 4 tubes, each consuming 115 watts; with ballasts using 30W per fixture, the setup demanded over 8330 watts of energy to operate.

"We replaced the older technology with 13 LED high-bay luminaires at 200W each, offering a brighter workshop illumination with almost 70% less energy consumption," says Mark Jarel, LEDtronics Street & Outdoor Lighting Product Sales Manager who is himself an avid sports car collector. "Using a total of only 2,600 watts, the LED lights saved the company 5,730 watts."

RTM Lighting & Electronics oversaw the installation.

An unexpected additional benefit Mr. Honsowetz has encountered is due to the fact that LED lights produce minimal heat as compared to their fluorescent or incandescent counterparts — notorious for wasting energy in the form of heat. "At our location here in Van Nuys we do experience outside temperatures over 100 degrees," he says. "With LED lighting, the interior temperature on hot days is easier to control." Van Nuys is a Los Angeles suburb that sits in the middle of the heat-prone San Fernando Valley.

Even visiting regular customers and vendors have noticed the lighting change, he adds. In the coming months, the firm plans to upgrade other machine shop areas to LED lighting from LEDtronics.

The LEDtronics HBL003-200W-XPW-101WD high bay surface light is dimmable and operates with a wide input voltage range 100 to 277 VAC, offering a wide beam of 6000K white light. It replaces 600-watt MH/HPS luminaires as well as fluorescent tubes, is UL listed and safety rated for wet locations.

In 2012, Ed Pink Racing Engines was the winner of trade magazine Engine Builder’s inaugural “Performance Engine Builder of the Year” award. With brighter and more efficient LED lighting installed in its hubs of design and assembly, one can expect more awards and trade recognition in the company’s future.

UL-Listed COB PAR30 LED Bulbs Provide up to 80% Energy Savings over Conventional Halogen Bulbs

By LEDtronics, Inc.

Torrance, Calif., Sept. 17 –LEDtronics® Inc., with more than 30 years of leadership in innovative LED lighting solutions, announces the newest member to its series of high-brightness, energy-efficient LED replacement bulbs. The LED PAR30C series of COB (Chip On Board) bulbs is ideal for indoor use in architectural/décor lighting, commercial applications, facilities, plants, hotels and resorts.

The PAR30C series comes with a clear, precision UV-stabilized polycarbonate lens that directs high-brightness 820 lumens in Warm White, 840 lumens in Natural White, and 790 lumens in Pure White LED color temperature. They have a 60-degree beam of light in a medium flood illumination pattern. The PAR30C bulb operates in a voltage input of 100 to 277VAC, offering long-lasting durability and easy drop-in installation in existing standard 26mm Edison screw-base sockets. This high-power bulb with high-grade COB LED replaces up to 60-watt halogen PAR30 bulbs, while consuming only 11 watts of power, resulting in tremendous energy savings of up to 80%.

These new state-of-the-art COB LED PAR30 bulbs are available in a Warm White 2750K to 3250K, Natural White 4000K to 4100K or Pure White 5000K to 5600K (other temperature colors available for qualified applications). As well, it boasts outstanding color fidelity with a CRI greater than 80 that enhances color nuances. In addition, these lamps maintain 70 percent or greater of LED lumens at 50,000 hours of operation — a lifespan many times longer than the equivalent halogen bulb!

Because LEDs have no filament, their solid-state design renders them impervious to shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental extremes. These ROHS-compliant UL-listed COB PAR30 LED bulbs contain no harmful mercury or other toxic elements; and unlike incandescent bulbs, LEDs do not emit large amounts of heat, and little to no ultraviolet or infrared light. This makes them perfect for use in museums, hospitals, offices or areas where UV radiation might degrade the surroundings (such as illuminating valuable artwork, wine cellars or food service areas). The fact that they run remarkably cool also means they greatly reduce building air-conditioning load on energy.

These economical, high-quality bulbs are perfect in non-wet outdoor or indoor spot lighting applications such as track lighting, ceiling-can down-light fixtures, security and emergency lights, general/architectural and landscape lighting, display case fixtures and cabinet lighting, sign spot lighting, OEM equipment lighting, bio-medical and medical applications, museums or theatrical-effects lighting.

Since LED lights are much more energy efficient than halogens and other filament-style lamps, these bulbs are perfect operating with an alternative or renewable energy resource such as solar or wind power in cold or warm environments. Also, they reduce light pollution in outdoor installations and, as a result, are compatible with the international “Dark Skies” initiative.

The COB PAR30-style LED bulbs come with a 5-year LEDtronics warranty, and are available through LEDtronics distributors. Retail price is $22.25 each. Quantity discounts are available to qualified distributors. Availability is stock to 4-6 weeks for large-order requirements.

Illumetric, West Hollywood’s "Art on the Outside" Program, Illuminated with LEDtronics LED T8 Tube Lights on the Inside

By LEDtronics, Inc.

The City of West Hollywood, through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, presents Illumetric—a triptych of massive diamond, cube and rectangle-shaped sculptures brought to the city by Shana Mabari.

Mabari's latest work is installed on the median of the 8400 block of Santa Monica Boulevard (between La Cienega Boulevard and Orlando Avenue) as part of the City of West Hollywood’s Art on the Outside program (July 2014 through June 2015).

Illumetric's diamond, cube and rectangle-shaped pieces radiate colors of red, blue and yellow. Throughout the day they will change from saturated hues to a transparent and ethereal glow as illumination effect takes place after the sun goes down. The pieces capture and interact with the ephemeral qualities of daylight, and feature internal LED illumination for nighttime display, emphasizing light as an intangible but physical and communal presence at any hour.

Shana Mabari is a Los Angeles-based artist who explores the intersections of art, science and technology in her work. Her installations and environments investigate ways in which we perceive our world through a skilled orchestration of light, reflection, color contrast and geometry. Her installations and environments investigate ways in which worldly stimuli and phenomena are absorbed and processed through sensory and visual perception. She orchestrates light, reflection, color contrast and geometry to play with and expand the reality and experience of physical space. Mabari's work extends the "Light and Space" movement that originated in the 1960s into the 21st century.

To light up the cube and rectangle-shaped sculptures, they used LEDtronics LED T8 tube lights. A total of 48 LED T8 tube lights of lengths from 2 to 4 feet were used in all. The 2-foot LED T8 only uses 9 watts and replaces 16W to 18W fluorescent tube lights. The 3-foot LED tube lights only use 13 watts and replace 25W to 30W fluorescent tube lights. The 4-foot LED T8s only use 18 watts and replace 32W to 36W fluorescent lights. LED T8 tube lights last over 50,000 hours, provide even lighting, no buzzing nor flickering, no harmful UV/IR radiation and no toxic mercury to worry about.

At the Illumetric "Art on the Outside" sponsorship reception held Sept. 9 at Palihouse Hotel in West Hollywood, left to right: Shana Mabari, artist; Mark Jarel, LEDtronics Product Sales Manager, Street & Area Lighting; from the City of West Hollywood, Joshua Schare, Public Information Officer; Mike Che, Arts Coordinator; Abbe Land, councilmember and former mayor, and Andrew Campbell, Arts Administrator.

LEDtronics LED Lighting Helps Florida Town Protect Sea Turtle Nesting

By LEDtronics, Inc.

Torrance, Calif., Aug. 8 – The City of Fernandina Beach, Florida, has completed modifications and upgrades to the lights at its Main Beach Park using LED turtle-friendly high power lighting that will protect sea turtle nesting without compromising the public’s safety at night.

The LEDtronics SLL003P-800-0UO-004 shoebox-style LED luminaires will offer over 65% energy savings and cost benefits related to reduced maintenance and much extended lifespan compared to traditional incandescent lights. Additionally, the upgrades will provide significant reduction in greenhouse gases.

The project was completed in partnership with Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch and with a grant administered by the Sea Turtle Conservancy.

The LEDtronics lights meet the requirements of Florida’s F&WCC Wildlife Lighting Certification Program when the luminaire’s light is downward directed in a manner that has minimal intrusion into sea turtle nesting beaches, migratory corridors, and Dark Skies Initiative-friendly communities.

Designed also to avoid disrupting turtle hatchling’s crawl to the sea, the LEDtronics lighting at the Dolphin Avenue and Main Beach parking lots also offered the city the option of reducing the height of the light poles. Additional benefits include: Maintenance-free operation of over 5 years; reduced light pollution — no wasted light; no ultraviolet emission — does not attract insects; enhanced vision — little or no debilitating glare as compared with standard high glare from HID lamps.

The GTE Companies of Jacksonville provided project-planning assistance. Vanguard Electric of Jacksonville installed the fixtures. The city’s maintenance crew also played a key role in facilitating this project. The Sea Turtle Grants Program provided funding with proceeds from the sale of Florida’s “Helping Sea Turtles Survive” specialty license plate (www.helpingseaturtles.org).

Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island is the northernmost city on the eastern coast of Florida, with a population of around 12,000. The city hosts loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles in the nesting season.

Many coastal counties and communities in Florida have developed lighting ordinances to reduce hatchling disorientations, since the state boasts the largest nesting concentrations of loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles in the United States. About 80 percent of loggerhead nesting in the southeastern U.S. occurs in six Florida counties. Total estimated nesting in the U.S. has fluctuated between 47,000 and 90,000 nests each year over the past two decades.

Solar Powered LEDtronics LED Area Lights Offer Security to Mesa Residential Community

By LEDtronics, Inc.

When residents of the Park Centre Casitas residential community in Mesa, Arizona, got together and hired a security company to survey the property and suggest ways to keep it safe, the security company suggested adding perimeter lighting.

Having received approval from the city’s utility department, residents of the complex, which consists of 192 condominium-style units in 25 buildings a few blocks north of downtown Mesa, first considered conventional lighting. After receiving a few quotes from various vendors, it became apparent that the cost would be too great, not to mention the inconvenience, time and installation hazards. They began to look for alternatives.

The city’s Energy Resources Department encouraged them to take advantage of its just-launched solar pilot program for customers in its electric service area. The program provided financial incentives and, if they used LED lighting powered by photovoltaic panels, there would be no additional cost for trenching, underground wiring and expensive power poles.

A modern-day urban retreat surrounded by the Sonoran Desert and with over 325 sun-drenched days a year, solar energy opportunities abound in Mesa — the third largest city in Arizona, some 15 miles east of Phoenix. The Park Centre Casitas residents decided to accept the city's offer.

This brought them to LEDtronics. With the help of the local representative, HOWARD INDUSTRIAL SALES, a shipment was arranged of 10 shoebox-style LED luminaires specifically designed for alternative-energy sources. Operating on a voltage input range of 10-to-30VDC, the LEDtronics SLL003-400-TPW-10/30VM3 units consume only 23 watts and can replace metal-halide area lights up to 100W. They are ideal for parking lots, parks, walkways and pole-mounted area and periphery lighting.

In addition, for a desert city like Mesa, LED lighting reduces light pollution — no wasted light, and conforms to the international “Dark Skies Initiative.” The City completed the installation, including the LEDs, solar panels, battery boxes and light poles. Four lights were installed, with the rest reserved for emergency service and replacement. Now the residents feel safer strolling after dark to the ball field where the Chicago Cubs have their winter home, within walking distance from the Casitas.

In a bid to pursue a more energy-efficient, healthy and sustainable environment, the City of Mesa so far has installed over 840 kW of renewable solar energy inside its service area, and more solar projects are in progress.
