After a $27 million makeover, the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, commonly
known as the South Capitol Street Bridge, reopened in August 2007. Part of the
decaying bridge's overhaul included new lighting using light fixtures from LEDtronics,
Inc., of Torrance, California.
The 55-year-old bridge serves 77,000 commuters daily as a major entrance to
Washington, D.C. The renovation effort aimed to help turn South Capitol Street
into a more appealing tree-lined boulevard near the new Washington Nationals
baseball stadium.
The South Capitol Street Bridge lights are made up of energy-saving, long-life
LED light fixtures, part number BSD-1928-001, provided by LEDtronics, Inc.These
LED light fixtures only consume 15 watts of energy each—a saving of 70% to 90%
over traditional incandescent light. They also offer long life (up to 100,000
hours), saving on maintenance and upkeep costs. In addition, the LED lights
are night-vision-friendly and help keep light pollution to a minimum.
